Russian power to continue coming to Baltic states through Latvia

HELSINKI, Nov 5 (PRIME) – Russian power exports to the Baltic states will be diverted from the border between Belarus and Lithuania to the border between Russia and Latvia as Lithuania has closed power imports from Belarus after the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in the city of Astravets, Estonian power company Elering said on November 3.

Elering quoted CEO Taavi Veskimagi sa saying that trade on the Latvian–Russian border will start on Thursday and that the transmitted power will be halved as compared with the power exported by Belarus.

“Power flows will be transmitted through the Russian–Latvian border until the power systems of the Baltic states are synchronized with the frequencies of the European power grid system at the end of 2025,” Elering quoted CEO Taavi Veskimagi as saying.

“In addition to suspension of power trade with Russia, it is important for Estonia to install a power grid fee for the power from the third countries in the spring of 2021 to decrease the unequal competition.”

The Belarusian Energy Ministry said that the first reactor of the nuclear power plant was connected to the country’s power grid, this is why Lithuania suspended power trade with Belarus and other states via Belarusian power transmission lines.
